Glocks With Safety - One of the most revolutionary and innovative features of the Glock series handguns is their tagline, "GLOCK Safe Action." Although there is no external manual safety, there are three internal elements: a trigger guard, a firing pin safety, and a burnout safety. This paved the way for modern handguns to place the responsibility of handling firearms on the user rather than on an arbitrary lever. It is a tactical necessity to make the weapon easy to operate. But has there ever been an experimental Glock made with an external safety? During the initial tests by the Austrian army in 1982, the army did not use the military weapon that could be issued without external protection. So the military requested a test pistol and Glock made them a study pistol. Handgun maker Glock says its pistols are the epitome of perfection, and the Austrian-designed handguns have indeed won fans. However, one complaint about Glocks is that their trigger pull is too light to be safe, leading to accidental discharges. Is there any truth to this rumor?
The Glock 17 handgun gained near-universal acclaim in the United States in the early 1980s. The new pistol, which makes significant use of polymers to achieve a lighter carry weight, has several new or previously obscure features, including a striker-fired operating system. Although not new, the percussion firing system is opposed to the traditional hammer firing system that is typical of many handguns on the American market.
In percussion pistols, pulling back the slide of the handgun cocks the weapon halfway, a process that ends when the trigger is pulled. Pulling the trigger releases three different safeties, each designed to stop an accidental release that does not have the trigger held on the trigger. One of the final actions activated by the trigger pull is the release of the firing pin loop, which causes the firing pin to fire. This striking force eventually impacts the primer, setting off a chain reaction that culminates with the bullet exiting the barrel of the gun.

Glock calls the striker-fired system its "safe action" operating system, and there's a lot of truth to that. The Glock only fires when the trigger is depressed, meaning that accidental drops from the holster and other objects on the ground, for example, will not cause the hammer to fly forward and the primer. Three safety features, including a trigger safety, prevent the handgun from firing without human intervention.
One of the main advantages of a striker-fired system is the relatively light trigger pull compared to other handgun operating systems. All full-size and compact Glocks have a trigger pull that is about twenty-four newtons, or 5.39 pounds, compared to twenty-eight newtons, or 6.29 pounds, on smaller concealed carry Glock handguns. This level of power is not unusual, but the trigger pull of the 1911A1 pistol ranges from 4.5 to 6.1 pounds.
Other handguns, especially double-action handguns, have much heavier triggers. The official handgun of the US military for decades, the Beretta 92 has an original thirteen-pound trigger pull, moving through the steps to drop the trigger hammer, then a lighter five-pound pull for subsequent shots.
While many handguns have very heavy trigger pulls, it is clear that others have the same trigger pull weight as the Glock and have for decades. The Glock's "light trigger pull" appears to be largely due to a combination of factors, including operator error and gun design.
On Glock Safeties
In the typical situation where a "light trigger" is the problem, the only reason the handgun fires is to pull the trigger. New Glock owners accustomed to the heavy triggers of double-action handguns may find that they apply more pressure than the handgun should, causing the gun to trigger prematurely. However, this is a training error, not a design error.
One issue contributing to the controversy is the Glock's lack of an external safety that prevents the trigger from being pulled. The lack of an external guard means there is no failsafe mechanism should the handgun operator violate the third rule of firearm safety: Always keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire. A slightly careless shooter with an external safety gun can be punished by a Glock with serious consequences. While the Glock can undoubtedly benefit from an external safety, the onus is on pulling the trigger.
Glock handguns may have "light" triggers, but historically they were no lighter than other regular handguns. At the end of the day, only the handgun operator can fire their handgun and it is up to the Glock owner to use their gun safely and learn the ins and outs of their gun. Handguns are associated with freedom, but also with responsibility.

The ultimate safety consists of a trigger guard that rests on a safety ramp on the trigger lever. The trigger rod engages the rear of the firing pin and prevents the firing pin from moving forward. Pulling the trigger back lowers the trigger bar below the safety ramp and allows the firing pin to be released. After firing, the trigger moves up and re-engages with the firing pin. When the trigger is released, all safety devices are automatically reset.
